Overview
Doubao (豆包) is the consumer AI assistant built by ByteDance, sitting at the center of the company’s model ecosystem alongside the Doubao / Seed family of large models. It launched in China in 2023 and has grown into one of the most-used AI apps in the world, with hundreds of millions of monthly active users by 2026. The product is genuinely multimodal: you can chat, draft and polish writing, analyze uploaded PDFs and long documents, generate images, and hold real-time voice or video conversations in the same app. Underneath, it runs on the Doubao 2.1 Pro and Turbo models, which ByteDance positions as cost-competitive with Western frontier models. For developers, the same models are exposed through Volcano Engine’s Ark platform as a paid API. The free tier covers most daily tasks, which is the main reason it has become a default starter AI for Chinese-speaking users.
Key Features
- Multimodal chat in one surface — text, image generation, document Q&A, and voice/video calls live in the same app instead of separate tools
- Long-document and PDF analysis — upload reports or papers and ask follow-up questions; useful for study and office work
- Real-time voice with interruption — the voice model streams replies, handles mid-sentence interruptions, and shifts topics naturally
- Low-cost enterprise API — Volcano Engine serves the same models at ¥6/MTok in and ¥30/MTok out for 2.1 Pro, far below Western equivalents
- Cross-device sync — web, iOS, Android, and PC clients share context and history
- Free core features — search, writing, image generation, and voice/video chat stay free for everyday users

Comparison
vs. DeepSeek: DeepSeek is the stronger pick for open-weight transparency and coding benchmarks, while Doubao wins on consumer polish and multimodal features inside one app. vs. Qwen: Qwen offers a wider open-model lineup and strong English coverage; Doubao leads on Chinese everyday UX and a free, frictionless app. vs. Kimi: Kimi is built around very long context and research reading; Doubao is broader, covering voice, image, and video chat that Kimi does not.
